NEW ORLEANS, LA

The first Mardi Gras after Hurricane Katrina and the Zulu All-Stars roared along the Zulu Second line right after Crewe de Zulu threw it’s last spear and coconut into the screaming crowds. During this time many folks were scattered near and far across the United States still swallowed in the traps and snares of the hurricane Diaspora. For many of the musicians this was there first time back in New Orleans since the storm and freshly filled with all the energy of the Zulu parade the Zulu second line exploded with at times 20 excited musicians from three or four bands back in the streets playing the music which makes the spirit fly. This 06 edition of the Zulu All-Stars is made up of members of the Hot 8 Brass Band, TBC Brass Band, Soul Rebels Brass Band, New Birth Brass Band and other musicians who slipped into the line for a song or two during the second line. If you listen close you’ll hear two or three tubas, three or four snares, two base drums, countless trumpets, trombones, saxophones in a New Orleans polyphony free for all seldom witnessed even in this magical city of song.
